Tim Ozgener Leaves C.A.O.

Tim Ozgener, the last member of the founding Ozgener family to work at cigar producer C.A.O. International Inc., is no longer with the company. Ozgener worked with C.A.O. for 16 years. He has been president of the company since 2006, and for many years was the face behind the brand, which makes a wide variety of cigars, including C.A.O. La Traviata.

In an exclusive interview with Cigar Aficionado, Ozgener said, "I am leaving C.A.O. as a result of the merger between Swedish Match and S.T. [Scandinavian Tobacco] that is moving the new business to Richmond, Virginia. Because of that move I have decided not to move with the company to Richmond."

Ozgener cited his strong roots in Nashville, Tennessee, where C.A.O. has been headquartered since its founding in 1968, as his reason to stay. "I'm pretty well established in Nashville," said Ozgener. "My family is here, my wife's family—I'm not willing to uproot my family. Nashville has been a great city for karma, for me and my family."

Dan Carr, president of General Cigar said, "We remain committed to C.A.O. and are grateful to Tim for his contributions, not only to the brand but also for sharing his knowledge with the people who will continue his legacy. While we will miss Tim's insight and passion, we respect his choice and wish him well."

Gary Hyams, chairman of C.A.O. International said, "It has been a privilege to work with Tim over the last three and a half years and to have had the opportunity to share in his passion for C.A.O. I wish him and his family all the very best for the future."

General's statement lauded Ozgener for his innovative packaging, new flavor profiles and unique marketing concepts to the C.A.O. brand, "which has continued to thrive since the company's inception." Ozgener said one of his proudest achievements was creating C.A.O. Brazilia, made with a Brazilian wrapper and packed in a green box, both unusual at the time.

Ozgener said his future plans were still undecided. He mentioned his co-ownership of a Nashville bar called The Patterson House as something he might further pursue. When asked if he was done making and selling cigars, Ozgener said, "Never say never. It's almost like asking Brett Favre if he's retired from football."

Армянская Сигарная Ассоциация, совместно с Посольством Кубы в Российской Федерации и компанией “Cigar Aristocrat” организуют поездку группы любителей сигар, рома и латиноамериканского джаза на Кубу.

Во время поездки группа посетит города Варадеро и Гавана. В Варадеро (5 звёздочная гостиница, пакет «все включено») кроме активного водного и комплексного spa отдыха, будет организована океанская рыбалка на современной яхте. В Гаване (5 звёздочная гостиница, пакет «все включено» кроме спиртного) группа посетит сигарную долину Пинар дель Рио, всемирный музей рома, сигарную фабрику Partagas, музей Че Гевары, и другие известные достопримечательности Кубы. Padrons Release Family Reserve No.46

Forty-six years after forming his cigar company in Miami, José Orlando Padrón came to New York City for the formal release of his family’s latest cigar. The Padrón Family Reserve No. 46 was unveiled last night at a sold-out smoker held at New York City’s Grand Havana Room, high atop Fifth Avenue. The nearly 200 guests were a mix of Grand Havana Room members and cigar smokers who came from as far away as Cleveland, Arizona and Florida to be at the event.

The 84-year-old Padrón, accompanied by his son Jorge, was the guest of honor at the event, which was organized by Jorge Armenteros, creator of Tobacconist University. “We’re all celebrating a special anniversary,” said Armenteros, who called José Orlando Padrón “more than the embodiment of the American dream—he’s the kind of man you only get to meet once in a lifetime.

The Padrón Family Reserve No. 46 Maduro is a dark corona gorda measuring 5 1/2 inches long by 56 ring gauge. The squared off, trunk-pressed smoke is being made with some of the Padrón’s oldest tobaccos. A taste of a sample handed out at the event was full flavored, not as strong as the Family Reserve No. 45 Maduro but stronger than the 44. It had very rich, balanced flavors, with notes of nuts and cocoa. The cigar has a suggested retail price of $25, and is made in Estelí, Nicaragua, at Padrón’s Tabacos Cubanica factory.

Cohiba Behikes Reach Canada - With $100 Price Taghs

Cuba's hot new cigar brand, the Cohiba Behike trio of fat, pigtailed smokes, are now on sale in Canada. The cigars officially went on sale on July 21 at a golf event.

Behikes are very expensive smokes, selling for $30 to $45 apiece in Mexico and Switzerland, but Canadian taxes push their prices to eye-popping levels. One BHK 52, the slimmest (and cheapest) of the trio, sells for 75 to 80 Canadian dollars ($71 to $76), the BHK 54 is C$89 to C$105 ($85 to $100) per cigar, and the BHK 56 sells for about C$115 ($110). That's C$1,150 ($1,100) for a ten-count box.

Despite the stratospheric prices, Cohiba Behikes are selling out, even in Canada. "They sell out pretty quick—they go real fast," said one Canadian retailer. Added another: "We're on our second round of them. We have a few of the 52s, and we have 17 [left] of the 56. We sold out of the 54s pretty quickly."

Cuban cigar legend Robaina dead at 91

HAVANA — Cuban tobacco grower Alejandro Robaina, an international symbol of the island's cigar-making prowess, died Saturday. He was 91.

Cuban state television announced his death, and the state tobacco concern Habanos SA, which produces the Robaina brand cigar, said on its website that he was the "victim of a somber illness."

The only Cuban grower with a cigar brand named after him, Robaina traveled for decades as an unofficial global ambassador for the island's stogies. Into his final days, he could be found smoking cigars in a rocking chair on his front port in San Luis, in westernmost Pinar de Rio Province.

He worked the fields in Vuelta Abajo, Cuba's most-famous cigar-growing region, where Habanos — a joint venture between the communist government and Britain's Imperial Tobacco Group PLC — produced Robainas.

Born in the town of Alquizar on March 20, 1919, Robaina began working his family's fields from the time he was 10. He remained in Cuba when that land was nationalized after the revolution that toppled dictator Fulgencio Batista and brought Fidel Castro to power on New Year's Day 1959.

Robaina became famous for the top-quality tobacco he helped produce and was honored numerous times by the Castro government.

"He left an indelible mark on the history of Cuban tobacco," Havana's Radio Reloj reported

New Puro by Davidoff

The Davidoff Puro d’Oro, originally intended to be on sale a year ago, is finally ready. The Dominican puros will be launched on April 27 at Davidoff of Geneva’s flagship store in the United States, located on Madison Avenue in New York.

The Puro d’Oro has a wrapper grown by Davidoff maker Hendrik (Henke) Kelner in Yamasá, an area of the Dominican Republic north of the capital city of Santo Domingo and far from Santiago and its surrounding tobacco fields.

The presentation is striking and unusual. The word Davidoff does not appear on the cigar, which is devoid of a traditional cigar band. Instead, the cigars have narrow golden footbands with beading on the edge, bearing the name of the cigar size in subtle, embossed relief type. Each cigar has a tight pigtail cap.

Davidoff’s Puro d’Oro will come in four sizes, all of them relatively small, traditional sizes. The Magnifico is a robusto size, Notable is a corona gorda, Deliciosos is a corona and the Sublime is a short panetela

PG Turns 20 !

In In the late 1980s, Paul Garmirian was a happy cigar lover, with a successful real-estate business. But being a simple enthusiast was not enough.

Urged on by friends such as Georgetown Tobacco owner David Berkebile, he published one of the best-received books ever written on cigars – The Gourmet Guide to Cigars – in 1990. And then he took an enormous step and created his own cigar line, the Paul Garmirian Gourmet Series, universally known as “P.G.”

And now the line is about to celebrate its 20th year.

As he wrote in first revised edition of The Gourmet Guide to Cigars in March 1992, by the time he finished the first edition of the book, he had completed his research project into the blend he wanted for his own cigars. Like any careful businessman, he tested his blend among smokers in the Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles areas in 1991 and was warmed by the positive response. The formal launch came in May 1991.

Now in late 2009, his 20th anniversary cigar has just arrived at a few retail outlets around the country. The blend, produced as usual at Tabadom in the Dominican Republic, is one that Garmirian calls ... :: more ::

Известно, что культура потребления сигар в мире имеет многолетнюю историю.
Время от времени, в различных странах организовываются сигарные дегустации и фестивали, где знатоки сигар (афисионадо) дегустируют сигары, делятся впечатлениями, идеями по представленой продукции, разрабатывают удачные сочетания сигар с различными спиртными напитками, или просто общаются.
В Армении же эта культура появилась сравнительно недавно.
Огромную роль в этом деле сыграло создание основными импортерами сигар в Армении Армянской Сигарной Ассоциации, которая, несмотря на свое недолгую историю, уже успела спланировать и успешно претворить в жизнь несколько “сигарных” проектов.
 Крупнейшим из них стал Первый международный сигарный фестиваль “High Smoke”, который состоялся вечером 10-ого марта в летнем саду гостиницы Голден Тюлип Ереван.
Подобные мероприятия зарубежом вообще-то принято называть «Big Smoke», однако название “High Smokе” не только более точно передало изначальный замысел организаторов, но и царящую на фестивале атмосферу и, конечно же, состав приглашенных гостей.
В этот вечер сигара обьединила известных армянских представителей деловых кругов и шоу-бизнеса, политиков и дипломатов, представителей крупнейших компаний, известных и признанных афисионадо и просто любителей сигар.
К тому же, кроме гостей из самой Армении, присутствовали также знатоки и любители сигар из России, Грузии, Латвии, Доминиканской Республики и из США.
  Спешим рассказать, что со стороны Армянской Сигарной Ассациации на мероприятии для дегустации были представлены сигары Vegas Robaina (Куба), PG (Paul Garmiryan, Доминиканская Республика) и CAO (Никарагуа).
Ну и какая же дегустация сигар без спиртных напитков!
В этот вечер спиртным высоких гостей угощал эксклюзивный спонсор фестиваля – Ереванский коньячный завод, который является членом французской группы Перно Рикар (Pernod Ricard) – одного из лидеров по обьемам производства и продажи алкогольной продукции в мире!
Усилиями Ассоциации и специалистов Ереванского коньячного завода были получены удивительные сочетания алкогольных напитков с дегустируемыми сигарами. К примеру, к кубинской сигаре Vegas Robaina специалистами был предложен знаменитый кубинский ром Гавана Клуб семилетней выдержки (Havana Club), а к известнейшей доминиканской сигаре PG – знаменитый армянский коньяк Наири. Рекомендовалось также сочетание сигар с известнейшим шотландским виски Чивас Ригал двенадцатилетней выдержки (Chivas Regal 12).
А те гости, которые по той или иной причине воздержались от употребления крепкого алкоголя, смогли насладиться изумительными коктейлями на основе армянского коньяка Ани, которыми в тот вечер угощал Ереванского коньячный завод.
